A fast-moving fire sparked by a possible malfunction in a disc jockey's sound system spread through an unoccupied hotel lounge, heavily damaging it, the bar, the hotel lobby, and a decorative four-story tower near the hotel's entrance.
A decorative tower at the front of the building was of similar construction. Smoke detectors were installed in the lobby, but there were no sprinklers.
Firefighters received the alarm at 11:38 p.m. and responded within eight minutes to find light smoke in the lobby.
The single-story building, which had a brick exterior, had no sprinklers or smoke detection equipment. It was closed for the night at the time of the fire.
